This is a proposed connection between two domains, generated by a language model. It is not an article and not evidence: it sits below the evidence/publication boundary. A quantitative prediction and a named kill-dataset are attached (when registered) so the claim stays falsifiable rather than merely evocative.

Claim (verbatim)

Byzantine men of letters left two great paper trails: orations, the public speeches that made reputations, and letters, the private notes that maintained friendships. This conjecture claims the two genres travelled through the manuscript tradition in opposite vehicles: orations moved as singles and small clusters, excerpted into rhetorical teaching anthologies, while letters moved as whole curated corpora, because a letter is worthless alone — its value is the network it documents — and because authors and heirs edited letterbooks as monuments, releasing them as sealed units. So orations should show many witnesses each carrying few works, and letters few witnesses each carrying many. If this holds, the survival odds of a Byzantine author's private voice depended on a single editorial act by his executors, which explains why we have either hundreds of a man's letters or none.

In Pinakes works-by-witnesses counts, for at least six of eight authors with substantial surviving corpora in both genres (Libanius, Synesius, Gregory of Nazianzus, Basil, Psellos, Theodore of Nicaea, Nicephorus Gregoras, Demetrius Cydones), mean witnesses per individual oration will exceed mean witnesses per individual letter, while mean number of letters per letter-carrying witness will exceed mean orations per oration-carrying witness by at least a factor of three. Primary clause: the letters-per-witness completeness factor.

Searched Byzantine epistolographic transmission. That letters travel as curated, author- or heir-edited collections is the standard view (Companion to Byzantine Epistolography), but the genre-vehicle contrast quantified as witnesses-per-oration vs witnesses-per-letter in Pinakes is un-run.
