A curious class of early Christian and Byzantine texts survives only in Old Church Slavonic although composed in Greek — the Greek originals are gone. This conjecture claims that loss was genre-targeted: the Slavonic-only survivals are overwhelmingly apocalypses, visionary tours of heaven and hell, and para-biblical legends, not saints' lives or homilies, because Constantinopolitan ecclesiastical filtering pruned precisely the visionary-apocryphal shelf from the copying stream, while the young Slavonic church, translating hungrily before the filter hardened, carried the shelf north and kept it.
