A Byzantine kanon is sung to model stanzas, heirmoi, which fix its meter and melody; early hymnographers composed new heirmoi freely. The conjecture is that heirmos creation shut down like a mint closing: after about 900 the repertory of models was effectively frozen, and later kanon writers — however prolific — overwhelmingly set their words to existing heirmoi rather than coining new ones. The mechanism is notational and institutional: once heirmologia (the model-books) were compiled and copied as authoritative collections, a new melody had no channel into the books that choirs actually sang from.
