The surprising connection is that in performance texts this layer is a cueing system rather than a reading aid: a reciter who knows the patter needs the eye's help only at the danger points, the transitions from prose into seven-syllable verse and back, where pacing and tune change, while inside a metrically uniform run the meter itself steers. Users made it so because annotation effort goes exactly where performance can fail. If this holds, added-mark topography alone identifies which surviving copies were performers' working texts, turning a neglected annotation layer into a map of where performance actually needed writing.
