Join it instead to price theory: the palimpsest share of surviving parchment books is a market barometer, tracking the cost of new skins relative to scribal wages, region by region and century by century. Scraping costs only labour while a fresh leaf costs money, so a house recycles precisely when the skin's replacement price exceeds the scraping wage, and the recycling rate therefore records the parchment-to-wage ratio without anyone intending it to.
