Natural rights

The Enlightenment doctrine that persons hold certain rights (paradigmatically life, liberty, and property/estate) inherently, prior to and independent of government or positive law -- most influentially systematized in Locke's Second Treatise of Government and echoed in the American founding-era natural-rights vocabulary.
